“Salieri composed this dramma eroicomico to a libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti, Lorenzo Da Ponte’s great rival in Vienna in the 1780s. This quite amazing work was not performed in the eighteenth century. Commissioned shortly before Austria entered the Russo-Turkish conflict in 1788, it was rehearsed, but for political reasons could not be premiered. So here we present the world premiere performance in Italian of Cublai, Gran Kan de’ Tartari, with a very fine cast, and staging by the young and talented Martin G. Berger.”
