« Born in Florence at the beginning of the 17th century, opera quickly captivated the Venetian public in the 1620s-1630s. It travelled beyond court festivities and became accessible to the general public, who suddenly had to pay for their tickets. By the 1650s, Naples, having still no great opera composer of its own, imported works from Venice, notably those of Monteverdi and Cavalli, key figures of 17th century Venetian music. Neapolitan adaptations, such as The Coronation of Poppea, bear witness to this influence. This programme honours these two composers, enriched with instrumental pieces by Falconieri, adding a Neapolitan touch!
The programme also brings together Apolline and Thaïs Raï-Westphal, two sisters whose voices blend perfectly, enhanced by their natural bond and obvious harmony. I had the pleasure of working with them early in their careers, both at the Opéra-Comique and on works by Lully. This is a great opportunity to reunite them and have them collaborate once again on this programme, which has already been a resounding success! »
