« What’s fascinating about Gassmann’s L’Opera seria is that it takes us behind the scenes of an opera production – full of intrigue, rivalry between prima donnas, and even meddling mothers! Here, love is mostly self-serving: people sleep their way into roles, plot, and manipulate. Yet again, another face of love…
Gassmann, who taught Salieri, was a major figure in Vienna in his time, though he’s little known today. Connection to Salieri both intrigues me and delights me. And with such a brilliant cast, this promises to be an exciting project.
As for Vienna – and the ever-faithful Theater an der Wien – my love for this city is anything but measured. It’s passionate! »
