« Giovanni Legrenzi, born in Clusone, Lombardy, spent most of his career in Venice, fitting perfectly into this programme alongside other Venetian composers like Sances and Barbara Strozzi, who also published their works there. It was a time when laments about unrequited love were everywhere. Nothing strikes the heart more than these laments – they resonate deeply within us, capturing the simplicity of the human experience, a shared lingering ache.
The form is simple: a solo voice accompanied by basso continuo. Yet, the Italians, with their mastery of emotional expression, manage to convey intense feelings with nothing more than a single voice. We see this already with Monteverdi in Venice – no need for grand orchestras to dive into the depths of human passion. This is a musical journey through the City of the Doges, an immersion into the canals of intimate emotion, where each composer offers their own unique take on this universal sentiment. »
