« This programme features the cantata Non sa che sia dolore, the heart-wrenching tale of a love torn apart: a soldier heads off to war, leaving behind a woman bereft. Florie Valiquette will be our soprano for the occasion – a voice I’m particularly fond of. There’s a richness and lightness to her singing, with just a touch of innocence that I find especially moving. She’s such a radiant presence too, endlessly enthusiastic, and I’m truly delighted to be working with her again on this.

Now, this is a rather surprising Bach – a cantata in Italian, from a composer who famously had little time for opera seria! And yet, from the very first note, it’s unmistakably Bach. For a harpsichordist like me, Bach is quite simply part of daily life. If I’ve not played for a few days, it’s always to him that I return. It’s a way of bringing the fingers back into shape… and the mind too, really. His music is like stone – something you polish endlessly, always finding new facets. I still feel a quiet pride in having worked my way through The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Art of Fugue – those are real brain-burners! But the connection with Bach is never finished. For a harpsichordist, he’s absolutely… organic. »
