Son of a braid-maker, Jean-Marie Leclair was born in Lyon on 10 May 1697 and was the eldest of a family of eight children. He usually signed his name as Leclair the elder to distinguish himself from his younger brother Jean-Marie Leclair the second, born in 1703, who traded mainly in Lyon.”
