Christophe Rousset, a fine connoisseur and peerless performer of the works of François Couperin (1668-1733), invites us to share a marvellous journey, a moment of friendship and intimacy, with two guiding threads: Light and Darkness.

Indeed, there are two sides to Couperin. The Light, to be seen in the innocence of certain pieces for harpsichord – Les Petits Âges or Les Amusements, for example –, in the power and glory of the Concerts royaux or the Goûts réunis, or in the expert badinage of his “airs sérieux”.    But alongside the Light there is Darkness, in the gravity of his Pièces de viole, in the twilit world of certain scores from the Livres pour clavecin, but above all in his celebrated Leçons de Ténèbres, composed for Holy Week.

Works for solo harpsichord, trios (violin, viol and harpsichord) and vocal compositions combine to form a deliciously intimate concert de salon like those in which Couperin participated with his Sun King as audience.
